All Governments Lie: The Life and Times of Rebel Journalist I. F. Stone By Myra MacPherson $14.99 <p>Boasting equal parts scholarship and style, <i>"All Governments Lie"</i> is a highly readable, groundbreaking, and timely look at I. F. Stone -- one of America's most independent and revered journalists, whose work carries the same immediacy it did almost a half century ago, highlighting the ever-present need for dissenting voices.</p><p>In the world of Washington political journalism, notorious for trading independence for access, I. F. "Izzy" Stone was so unique as to be a genuine wonder. Always skeptical -- "All governments lie, but disaster lies in wait for countries whose officials smoke the same hashish they give out," he memorably quipped -- Stone was ahead of the pack on the most pivotal twentieth-century trends: the rise of Hitler and Fascism, disastrous Cold War foreign policies, covert actions of the FBI and CIA, the greatness of the Civil Rights movement, the horror of Vietnam, the strengths and weaknesses of the antiwar movement, the disgrace of Iran-contra, and the class greed of Reaganomics. His constant barrage against J. Edgar Hoover earned him close monitoring by the FBI from the Great Depression through the Vietnam War, and even an investigation for espionage during the fifties.</p><p>After making his mark on feisty New York dailies and in <i>The Nation</i> -- scoring such scoops as the discovery of American cartels doing business with Nazi Germany -- Stone became unemployable during the dark days of McCarthyism. Out of desperation he started his four-page <i>I. F. Stone's Weekly,</i> which ran from 1953 to 1971. The first journalist to label the Gulf of Tonkin affair a sham excuse to escalate the Vietnam War, Stone garnered worldwide fans, was read in the corridors of power, and became wealthy. Later, the "world's oldest living freshman" learned Greek to write his bestseller <i>The Trial of Socrates.</i> </p><p>Here, for the first time, acclaimed journalist and author Myra MacPherson brings the legendary Stone into sharp focus. Oral English; Directions And Exercises For Planning And Delivering The Common Kinds Of Talks, Together With Guidance For Debating And $25.51 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:CHAPTER III THE SPEAKER'S APPEARANCE BEFORE THE AUDIENCE Thus far we have considered the preparation and the presentation of explanations and arguments, but in these discussions little has been said about the speaker's appearance before the audience, the use of his voice, his use of words, and the other factors which help to produce a pleasing effect. We shall consider some of these matters in this chapter. That the manner of our speaking is important we know, for it is common knowledge that many an unworthy business proposition and many a mistaken idea in political life have won recognition because of clever presentation, while many a worthy cause has failed for lack of effective speakers. EXERCISE Listen carefully to some speaker, preferably to one whom you have not heard before. Take notes if necessary, and come to class prepared to answer the following questions, and to give the reasons for ypur answers: 1. Was the speaker's subject matter well arranged ? 2. Was his manner pleasing? 3. Which was the better, his subject matter or his style of delivery? 4. Would you have been interested in the subject matter of the speech if the speaker's manner had been poor? 5. If you knew the speaker well enough, what suggestions for improvement could you give him? Repose before Speaking. All the recitations in Oral English classes should be given at the front of the room. When the student is about to speak, he should, walk quietly and naturally to that part of the room, turn toward his hearers, and look into their faces an instant before beginning. If there is a chairman, the student should turn toward him when giving his opening words. Many a talk has been spoiled by the speaker's standing so far back from his audience that all could not hear him. Therefore, if th... |

''Keep going'': African Americans on the road in the era of Jim Crow. $49.99 Americans loved their automobiles. African Americans in particular embraced their automobiles because every aspect of travel in the era of Jim Crow was circumscribed by race and cars allowed them to avoid the segregation of the Jim Crow railroad car and bus. Buying a car also meant participating in consumer capitalism, the essence of American culture. African Americans expressed middle class American values through car ownership and cars helped to alter the way that people behaved toward one and to change deeply entrenched racial etiquette. Along the highways there was a close relationship between race and the organization of space. As black families and business travelers went out on the road, from the 1930s to the 1960s, they discovered a landscape of public establishments where they were unwelcome or even treated with hostility.;To help navigate the hostile roadside environment a variety of guidebooks assisted African Americans as they traveled in a country still in the throes of segregation. These travel guides provided state-by-state listings of public accommodations---hotels and motels, tourist houses, colored YMCAs, restaurants, movie theaters, doctors, barbershops and beauty parlors and various places of entertainment---that welcomed black patronage. The longest lasting and most successful of the African American travel guides was the Negro Motorist's Green Book, published by Victor and Alma Green in their offices in Harlem. The Green Book appealed to middle class African Americans with its polite and restrained language. Ironically, middle class black travelers believed that travel would promote integration and defeat prejudice, but they were forced to stay in segregated accommodations when they traveled. The Green Book sustained itself for thirty years (1936-1966) by appealing to black middle class travelers and to white liberal supporters. The Standard Oil Corporation sponsored the Green Book and circulated it to their Esso gas station patrons. Travel |

''Organize and fight'': Communities, employers, and open-shop movements, 1890--1920. $49.99 This dissertation examines the employer-led open-shop drive in multiple communities during the Progressive Era. Focusing on both local and national anti-union employers' associations, it spotlights the challenges of breaking strikes, busting unions, and recruiting members. Union-fighting employers succeeded in weakening the labor movement by firing strikers, blacklisting union activists, and campaigning for pro-business legislation. Most participated in the open-shop movement because they wanted to reduce the power of organized labor, but others joined in large part because they wanted to socialize with their upper class friends. Drawing from the old and new labor historiography, this dissertation investigates both employers' anti-union activities and their cultural practices. This study maintains that employers' associations served members' financial, managerial, and fraternal needs.;Indeed, organized employers did much more than fight unions; they loved to party, and many were rather hedonistic. They enjoyed fancy banquets, cracking jokes, and singing songs with their colleagues. Rather than principled upholders of Republican virtue, organized employers were chiefly interested in earning money, establishing power over their labor force, shamelessly touting their manufacturing accomplishments, and schmoozing with their friends.;Chapter one focuses on the ways in which employer-organizers and salaried recruiters built two of the most militant anti-union associations, the National Founders' Association (NFA) and the National Metal Trades Association (NMTA). Leaders recruited members by delivering speeches, employing peer pressure, and coordinating effective strikebreaking campaigns. Manufacturers representing workplaces of various sizes joined the movement as a result.;In chapters two through four, I explore the ways in which the open-shop movement found expression in Cleveland, Ohio, Buffalo, New York, and Worcester, Massachusetts. .Net Windows Development $37 The author's experience while consulting for teams of developers that create line-of-business applications has led to an interesting finding: Most developers of this type of applications are very proficient at writing data-input forms, data manipulation, and reports. However, they fail to apply or even consider using in their applications many useful subsets of the functionality provided by the .Net Framework Class Libraries.Occasionally, a different feature will be needed in a program. It may be necessary to display a custom graphic such as an organizational chart, or to generate a specialized report that cannot be generated by the standard reporting engine. Or perhaps the program could benefit from supporting some of the features in the latest version of Windows. Or the code that is used for persisting complex objects could be made simpler by means of serialization. In this book, we present a few techniques that can be useful for performing various tasks that in many cases will not be familiar to the intended audience, but may come handy when some new feature or enhancement is needed in an application. Some of the topics that we cover are the following:•Special techniques for accessing data•New features in Windows 7•Using Graphics, Serialization and Reflection•Various techniques that should be well-known, but aren't.•Tips and tricks for Windows Forms applicationsMost tips can be used under all versions of Visual Studio. Whenever a specific minimum version is needed, it is noted in the text. A few specific examples make use of features that are new to Visual Studio 2010. All the source code for the examples can be downloaded from our web site http://www.krasispress.com |

Chapters: Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus, Linda Mccartney, Lee Miller, Francesca Woodman, Margaret Bourke-White, Robert Mapplethorpe, Walker Evans, W. Eugene Smith, David Lachapelle, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Garry Winogrand, Philippe Halsman, Lisette Model, Clarence John Laughlin, Peter Hujar. Excerpt: Ansel Easton Adams Ansel Easton Adams (February 20, 1902 April 22, 1984) was an American photographer and environmentalist , best known for his black-and-white photographs of the American West , especially in Yosemite National Park . One of his most famous photographs was Moon and Half Dome, Yosemite National Park, California. With Fred Archer, Adams developed the Zone System as a way to determine proper exposure and adjust the contrast of the final print. The resulting clarity and depth characterized his photographs and the work of those he taught the system. Adams primarily used large-format cameras, despite their size, weight, setup time, and film cost, because their high resolution helped ensure sharpness in his images. Adams founded the Group f/64 along with fellow photographers Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham , which in turn created the Museum of Modern Art 's department of photography. Adams's timeless and visually stunning photographs are reproduced on calendars, posters, and in books, making his photographs widely recognizable. Life Childhood Adams was born in the Western Addition of San Francisco, California , to distinctly upper-class parents Charles Hitchcock Adams and Olive Bray Adams. He was an only child and was named after his uncle Ansel Easton. The Adams family came from New England, having migrated from the north of Ireland in the early 1700s. His grandfather founded and built a prosperous lumber business, which his father later ran, though his father s natural talents |
